Membership Joining Terms

Who can join?

• Anyone who lives or pays rates in Central Otago or Queenstown Lakes Districts may join the libraries for free.
• Permanent membership is available to to anyone who will be living in the area for more than 3 months upon providing proof of address through a rental contract or lease, employment contract, rates or utilities bill, or similar document.
• Temporary membership is available for those residing in the area for up to 3 months.
• Reciprocal membership is available to visitors who will be in the area for 1 month or less and who are members of another New Zealand library.
• Digital membership is available to permanent and temporary residents and allows for access to our range of online library resources, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, online databases, online magazines, newspapers and feature films. Photo ID and proof of residence must be submitted by the applicant or carer to the libraries within 2 weeks of registration. This must be done in person at your local branch. If you are unable to come into the Library, you will need to re-register.
• Any permanent resident of the Otago and Southland regions, which includes the local government authority areas of the Dunedin City Council, Waitaki District Council, Clutha District Council, Gore District Council, Southland District Council and the Invercargill City Council.
• Children and young adults under the age of 18 are encouraged to join to receive their own membership card and account. However, details of a guarantor who is a library member must be provided.

What do you need to join?

To collect a library card you will need to show proof of your residence (document sent to your address, rates notice or employment/rental contract) or membership at a New Zealand Library and photo identification. After joining you receive a library card that is valid across all 15 libraries in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes districts.

What does my library card do?

• Borrow and request items from throughout the district.
• Borrow and access from our range of online resources, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, online databases, online magazines, newspapers and feature films.
• Allows remote access to your account including self-renewals.
• Borrow from other libraries and internationally via the InterLoan library system.
• Request a bag of books via our click and collect service for a contactless book service.
• One-on-one advice from library staff for research and digital assistance via our contact page.
