What is GenConnect?
GenConnect is a free, drop-in digital support programme delivered by Central Otago District Libraries. It connects local high school students with community members who would like a helping hand with everyday technology. Whether you’re just getting started with a device or want to build your confidence, our student volunteers are here to help: one-on-one, at your own pace.
What can we help with?
Our volunteers can support you with a range of everyday digital tasks, including:
- Setting up and using a smartphone, tablet, or iPad
- Creating and accessing email accounts
- Using library apps and online catalogues
- Sharing photos with family and friends
- Learning how technology can make life a little easier
All sessions are supervised by library staff at our Cromwell Library.
A programme built on connection
GenConnect is about more than learning how to use technology: it’s about people.
For students, it’s a chance to give back, build confidence, and develop valuable skills such as communication, patience, and empathy. Many are volunteering as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award or similar programmes.
For participants, it’s a relaxed and supportive way to ask questions, learn something new, and feel more confident in an increasingly digital world. Our library teams are always here to help with our technology questions, but we have become aware that some tasks may need a little more time. That's where creating these sessions has allowed us to provide more in-depth help for our community.
